Brief Report on Proposed Second Alarmers Building next to Boxwood House.

Met with Roman Pronczak, Township Manager & David Carmada, Fire Marshall. Location of new Second Alarmers opposite Boxwood House at the intersection of Cathcart and Skippack is pretty much a done deal. Exact location and actual footprint of building has not yet been determined. The earliest onset of building would be 12-18 months depending upon funding (require 50% of total cost needed to begin).

Site will have space for 4 employee cars; 2-3 emergency vehicles will be garaged inside. Currently Second Alarmers are housed in a trailer at the Township Building site. Access to new quarters will be via Cathcart Road. Boxwood driveway will need to be reconfigured and hopefully adequate parking will be available for Historical Society events.

The township will keep HSW informed and listen to our input as building plans are formulated. Shall try to keep you up to date as we learn what is happening. The Whitpain Resident Organization (WRO) is also actively monitoring this development with us. The WRO is a non profit organization which is free to join. Check out their website at www.WhitpainResidents.org for further information.

For those of you who cannot attend our meetings because of transportation problems, please let me know, and I shall try to arrange transportation.

Let me know if you have any suggestions for speakers or any topics for future programs. All feedback is welcome.

Thanks,
Herman

This Historic Fair will be held on Saturday, June 26 from 9:00 AM to 5:PM and Sunday 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Stanbridge Park Complex, 2501 Stanbridge St., East Norriton PA. (See directions below).

We are an official presenter with a table dedicated to our Society. At present we hope to be manning this table and disseminating information about our Society for the whole 2 days. However we need volunteers to help us at the table for an hour or two to give out our printed information on the history of the Society, Franklinville School and Boxwood. Any of you who would like to help us, please give me a call at 215-646-7314 or e-mail me at hermoni@verizon.net. In any case come out and see the exhibits, stop by and say hello.

The purpose of our presence is to let people know that we exist and who we are. We also hope to make contact with people from other historical societies and to foster an interest and appreciation of historic preservation and early American Education in Whitpain Township. We have invited the Wissahickon Valley Historical Society to share our table and they have graciously accepted.

Our Next Open Houses at the Franklinville School on Sundays 1-4 PM are July 18, August 15, September 19 and October 17. We shall need volunteers to help us at our future open houses. The job is easy, just come out and greet our visitors and socialize with your fellow members. Help them to feel at home and answer some questions (you will be provided with a FAQ sheet, so don’t panic) We have people there who can answer most questions.

Don’t forget our open house at the Franklinvillle School tomorrow, Sun, June 20th. The Evans-Mumbower Mill and the Wissahickon Valley Historical Society’s 1895 Schoolhouse will also be open to the public.

Welcome to our New Members: Alyce Santangelo and Joyce Keller of Blue Bell.

We would also like to thank the Women’s Club of Whitpain for their generous donation of $100 which we shall use for the restoration and preservation of the Franklinville School.

Thanks also to our gardening group: Alice Rogerson, Dottie MacDermott, Judy Hahn and Monica Ehret. Anyone interested in helping them, let me know.

Volunteering: If you have any spare time or interest in volunteering, I would love to hear from you. Let me know what your interests are and we probably have something for you to do. Particularly needed are people who are handy with tools and would like to use their talents to help the Society.

In Memorium: We wish to send our condolences to the families of Dr. Edna Lalli and Ellen Gladeck. Ellen was one of the founding members of our Society and a past president. She was also very active in the community and was the Chairperson for the Whitpain Township Bicentennial Commission which published ‘Whitpain... Crossroads in Time’ a history of Whitpain Township.

Hope to see you at Once Upon a Time... next Saturday or Sunday!

Thanks,
Herman Ehret, President

THIRD ANNUAL HOLIDAY SOCIAL MEETING!

Tuesday, December 8 th, at 7:30 PM

Please join us for a fun evening of music, refreshments and conversation. Meet old friends and make new ones as we gather together and partake of Holiday Cheer. Everyone is invited to bring a special sweet or savory treat which we will all share. Liquid refreshments will be provided.

This will be our last meeting for this year. Our first meeting next year will be on Monday, March 8, 2010 at the Wissahickon Library in Blue Bell. We will be holding a combined meeting with the Wissahickon Valley Historical Society and will have a program of songs by Bill Ridenhour. Mark your calendars and plan to attend!

At this Thanksgiving time, I want to thank everyone who has come forth and helped us in this year. Without your help and support we could not have done all that we have done.

SPECIAL THANKS TO:

• Whitpain Township, especially Ron Cione and Jeff Riley, for the wonderful new roofing recently completed on Boxwood House. Also for the many favors which are too many to list here.

• Beverly and Frederic Hahn for the attractive, durable and changeable sign to announce our Open Houses at the Franklinville School.

• The wonderful volunteers who helped to make our Franklinville School Open Houses and our Boxwood Attic Sales so successful this year.

• Our hard working gardening group, Judy Hahn, Dottie McDermott, Alice Rogerson, Monica Ehret, who have spent many hours weeding and planting bulbs and flowering plants for us to enjoy next year at Boxwood and the Schoolhouse.
Also to Aaron Quinn for his professional landscaping work.

• All our members who have paid their membership dues and a special thanks to those who generously gave an extra donation for our ongoing work at the School.

WELCOME TO OUR NEW MEMBERS: Barbara Moyer, Susan Rogers, Sharon Schaible and Bruce Barner all of Blue Bell. Also, welcome back to Barbara Spang of Blue Bell.

Reminder: Don't forget the upcoming Holiday Attic Sale at Boxwood on Saturday, December 12, 2009 9AM-3PM

MEMBERSHIP DUES & DONATIONS:

PLEASE RENEW NOW if you have not already done so! Dues and private donations are our only regular source of income for our historic preservation, maintenance and programs. We are a small, self-supporting volunteer group with NO endowment, business sponsors or steady outside income! We welcome you all to come to our meetings and participate in our events. However, if you cannot, if you are busy and have no time, we understand, but please continue your support by paying your dues.

We count on each of you to help us continue our work. Next year we will have costly structural repair work to be done at both the Schoolhouse and Boxwood. We have water damage which is causing the plaster in the Schoolhouse to peel. As of now, we need to replace the soffit and at least one window sill. We also need to do something about the drainage. At Boxwood we also need to repair, grout and paint the windows and their sills and repair the side entrance. We rent Boxwood from the Township, which does major repairs and maintenance, but we are responsible for minor repairs. Unfortunately we must also take down our beautiful large old tree at the rear of the Franklinville School. It is almost completely hollow and we were told it is in danger of falling down. All of this work costs money. Please take a few minutes to write that check and mail it. Get that out of your way and you’ll be able to sleep better tonight knowing that YOU have helped to preserve our past! Thanks.

Note: those who paid their dues after August 1st are considered in good standing.

HELP! If you know someone with carpentry skills and who could help with some of our minor repair needs, please contact me. Also, let me know if you have any suggestions to improve the Society or any topics for future programs. All feedback is welcome.

For those of you who cannot attend our meetings because of transportation problems, please let me know, and I shall try to arrange transportation. We’ll also try to schedule some daytime programs next year.

Best wishes for the upcoming Holiday Season and for Good Health and Happiness in the New Year,

April, 2009 Newsletter
EVENING MEETING: Tuesday, April, 28 2009 7:30PM

Program: Personal Reflections on the Great Depression Presented by: Art Driedger, Renowned Local Historian & Raconteur.

Join us for a pleasant and informative evening listening to Art regale us with his remembrances of his experiences growing up during the Great Depression of 1929 and how it influenced his life. Come and share with us with any stories that you remember from your own experiences or those of your own family. Those who know Art will tell you that hearing him speak is a pleasure and always enlightening.

Our Attic Sale (April 18) & Open House at the Franklinville School (April 19) were very successful in terms of attendance and profit. Most of the our visitors to the open house at the Franklinville School were there for the first time and were impressed with what we had done in the way of restoration and preservation.

I hope those of you who have never seen or have not seen the Franklinville School since before last year’s 150th Anniversary Celebration will come out and pay us a visit sometime this year. We also had a large contingent of neighborhood children who enjoyed themselves and hopefully managed to learn some of the history of the school and what it was like to live in the 19th century.

Many thanks to Art Driedger who showed them what fun it is to learn about local history. Open Houses at the Franklinville School are scheduled for May 17, June 21, September 20, and October 18 from 1-4 PM. The Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association (WVWA) will have open houses at the Evans-Mumbower Mill every third Sunday April-November.

The Wissahickon Valley Historical Society will have open houses at their headquarters in the 1895 Schoolhouse at Skippack and School Roads on the third Sunday of April through October. Why not put aside a Sunday afternoon and make the rounds visiting us all? For more information on the activities of some local Historical Societies please check out our web page where we not only have links to other Historical Societies but also publish upcoming events by our own Society.

We shall be holding an Attic Sale on Saturday, May 9, (the day before Mother's Day!) at which time we shall also be selling plants.

Many thanks to those who donated items for sale at our Antiques show and for items to be used in our archival efforts. We must also give special thanks to Carol Felbin who gave us some books from the 19th century including a spelling book published in 1842. We shall be showing this wonderful gift at our next meeting and displaying it at our upcoming open houses. If you have relevant historical items for which you may want to find a good home please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes to Bill and Sarah Proctor who have moved to Seattle, Washington. They have been long time members of our Society and will be missed. They were very faithful in attending our meetings and I especially will miss seeing them there. Through the years they have contributed much to our Society.

If you have ideas for future programs or know of someone who can give a presentation on a topic of interest to the Society, please contact me.

It’s that time of year again. Shake off those cobwebs and winter blues and join us for our first meeting of the year. It should be a really good and interesting meeting. We are honored to have as our speaker Alice Rogerson, who will present a program about candle making. This topic is relevant to a better understanding of our past because candles were one of the primary source of lighting in the early days of this nation. Come and learn how it was done and take part in this unique program by having some hands-on experience and learning about the art of candle making.

The program will be followed by light refreshments. Open Houses at the Franklinville School are tentatively scheduled for the third Sunday of April (April 19th), May, June, September and October. We’ll give you the actual dates in the next newsletter and on our website.

The Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association (WVWA) will have open houses at the Evans-Mumbower Mill every third Sunday April-November. We also hope to coordinate same day open houses with the Wissahickon Valley Historical Society. We will also try to forge new and stronger ties with other historical societies in the area and to coordinate events with them.

For more information on the activities of the various Historical Societies please check out our web page where we not only have links to other Historical Societies but also publish upcoming events by our own Society. The WVWA is having a special presentation at the Evans-Mumbower Mill on April 5, 2009 at 1:00, 2:00 and 3:00 PM. for local Historical Society members only. The presentation is called "Meet the Millwright." WVWA is bringing in a real millwright from Virginia for the occasion. This presentation is not open to the general public and space is limited so either contact me or Kirk Horstman at horstman1@prodigy.net

Attic Sale: Our first attic sale will be Saturday, April 18, 9AM to 3PM. There will also be an attic sale Saturday, May 9, the Saturday before Mother's Day, at which time we shall also be selling flowers.

Last year was very good for the Society. We had a very successful 150th Anniversary Celebration of the Franklinville School, got our website at www.histsocwhitpain.org, launched and picked up some new members who we hope will join us at our meetings.

Unfortunately we lost a few members who will be sorely missed (Joan Taylor, Bob Renner and Muriel Cook) and to whose families we extend our deepest sympathy. Muriel had been with the Society since its’ beginning. Bob spent many hours volunteering in fixing up Boxwood and the Franklinville Schoolhouse and supporting us in many ways. Joan gave us much in the way of documents and papers.

Fayette Plumb is resigning as Treasurer effective the end of March. I want to thank him on behalf of the Society for his excellent and dedicated service as Treasurer. He will still be active in the Society. We need someone to take over the duties as Treasurer. If you are interested, please let me know.

In the coming year, we hope to continue progress toward achieving our goals. We plan to start an educational program on a regular basis for local schoolchildren to visit the Franklinville School as part of their fourth grade Pennsylvania History requirement. Anyone, especially retired teachers, who want to help let me know.

We also need to further organize our archives and preserve our documents and pictures. To do this we will need your help. If you wish to volunteer your time to help set up this task and/or help archive and file let me know. We are looking for some gently used two drawer filing cabinets, file folders and plastic sleeves which can hold documents.

If you have ideas for future programs or know of someone who can give a presentation on a topic of interest to the Society, please contact me.

We are making progress in developing our Website (www.histsocwhitpain.org) Many thanks to our webmaster Ron Stoloff for coming forth and volunteering to develop and maintain the site. Let me know what you think about the format and content. You are welcome to share any photos or information relevant to the history of the area or to the Society’s interests with us. Thanks again for all your support and help.
