Book Review

Wounded In The House of Friends was written by Elizabeth Sanchez. It consists of a variety of stories, hiku’s and poems. Sanchez wrote this book to share her inner feelings of her distraught childhood to the world. I found it very interesting, it disturbed me greatly to read such painful situation. Sanchez grew up in Puerto Rico. She moved to the United States when she was younger and remains till this day. Her writing inspires me to express my feelings, but I don’t think I’d tell anyone about my hurtful years.

In Wounded In The House of Friends some major events were when Sanchez said “ I was raped at 2:00 in the morning....” after that first sentence - I knew this book was more than I could handle. I’m usually a strong person, but reading things like this messed my head up. Yet I still admire Sanchez’s gift for writing. She expresses herself well. At one point, more explicit words were said; “ I knew he was with someone else - he had cheated on me and denied it....... do I make love to him like they do?...aw hell, maybe I’ll just give it away, sweet black pussy...”. These are x-rated things to say, but Sanchez only tells the truth. Everything she writes has meaning to it- even if she uses different characters.

It’s a shame to know her story isn’t fiction. This book should only be read by mature adults and teenagers. As you can see from the previous quotes, there are explicit words in this book-which is why it should only be read by those mentioned. I’m surprised books like these can be published, but everyone has their own style of writing. Sanchez is a brilliant writer, she had the strength to tell the world her deepest secrets, and someday she’ll get the recognition and honor she deserves.
