This is an interview, that I contrived
from my viewing of a film. This is what Balbuena would have
said if I were to do the interview. The film is about a man
named Balbuena who immigrated to New York form the Dominican
Republic. His wife had died so he was persuaded to immigrate
by a friend. In New York he faced many issues and obstacles
especially trying to find work. The title of the movie is
Nueva Yol. The date of the movie is _____. The purpose of
the questions and answers is so that people can learn the
struggles that Balbuena faced. Balbuena represents other
immigrants.
Question : Why did you hesitate at first to
come to New York?
Balbuena : I didn't know how I was going to
turn out if I went to New York. I wanted to make sure it was
going to turn out good because I had to mortgage the house
in order to go to New York. I didn't want to throw away
everything me and my wife worked for now that she's
dead.
Question : How did your wife die?
Balbuena : She drowned. I was very sad
because she was 2 months pregnant.
Question : Did you know anyone in New
York?
Balbuena : Yes, My cousin lived in New York
already. I called him to ask him if I could move in with him
until I found somewhere to live.
Question : How did you feel in that
house?
Balbuena : I slept on the couch but I
didn't care because I just wanted to have somewhere to
sleep. I didn't know the couch turned into a bed. My
cousin's kids didn't welcome me much. I guess they didn't
like me staying there, but I didn't mind.
Question : Did you learn anything while you
were staying in your cousins house?
Balbuena : Yes, I didn't know how to work
the intercom and I had to call my cousin at work. Also,
there were a lot of locks on the door and I didn't know how
to take them off to open the door.
Question : What was the first experience
that you had in New York?
Balbuena : I got hit by a car when I went
into the street without looking. The person who hit me was a
woman, her name was Nancy. She was very nice. She paid for
the hospital bill and gave me her phone number.
Question : Did you ever use that phone
number?
Balbuena : Yes, I used it when I got lost
in New York.
Question : Why did you get lost?
Balbuena : I was looking for a job. I
didn't know who to call so I called Nancy. She came and got
me after I told her what street I was on.
Question : Where was your first job?
Balbuena : The first job that I had was in
a restaurant. I only got paid 40 dollars but because I only
worked for one day. At least I made a little money.
Question : Where did you finally get a
job?
Balbuena : The guy from the restaurant
called me and I worked there. I was earning $6 dollars an
hour.
Question : Did you ever get promoted in
your Job?
Balbuena : Yes, I was one of the owners of
the restaurant. When we sold it I got half of the
profits.
Question : Did the situation with the kids
in your cousins house change?
Balbuena : No, It got worse. My cousin said
that I had to move out.
Question : Did you have any more problems
with the kids?
Balbuena : Yes, I went to give my cousin's
daughter a hamburger she was undressed. My cousin came in
and started screaming at her and got to hype so he fainted
but got better.
Question : After that incident, did you
move?
Balbuena : Yes, I moved to a former whore
house. A lady rented me a room. She was the wife of a Cuban
soldier.
Question : What happened to Fellito?
Balbuena : I saw him in the street one
time. He was a crack addict. He had robbed from a drug
dealer and looked like a bum.
Question : What ever happened with
Nancy?
Balbuena : She moved back to the Dominican
Republic. I kept on writing her letters too keep in touch
with her.
Question : Do you know of something else
about Fellito?
Balbuena : He and another guy tried to
steel from me. He shot me and my landlady but the landlady
shot both of them before she died. That incident made me
dislike New York more and made me really want to get
out.
Question : Did you ever go back to Santo
Domingo?
Balbuena : Yes, I went back to my homeland.
I married Nancy and visited my wife's grave. I talked to her
but I didn't want to worry her with my problems so I told
her that every thing turned out fine. I was happy to go back
to the real paradise land.
This contrived interview shows the struggles that immigrants
go through when they choose to immigrate to a different
country. Moving is not easy, some people go through more
problems than others. Balbuena faced problems of himself. In
the dialogue between Balbuena and me you can see some of the
struggles that he faces. When he moved to New York he hoped
that it would be the land of opportunity but it was the
contrary. That's the chance that immigrants have to take and
in this interview you'll see the chance that Balbuena
took.
