Nueba Yol

Nueba Yol is a film about a man named Balbuena. He immigrated from Santo Domingo to New York. In my interview I am trying to find out information on Balbuenas immigration story. What his experience was, and how he reacted.

Q. What did people tell you about New York?

A. They said money was flying around in the streets and that people didn't even pay attention to it. They said New York was paradise.

 

Q. Who helped you get your passport?

A. Fellito my friend got me my passport.

 

Q. With whom did you plan to stay?

A. I was going to stay at my cousins house.

 

Q. Were you happy that you were going to New York?

A. Yes, I was happy and excited because, I was moving to the rich land.

 

Q. With whom did you travel to New York?

A. I traveled to New York With my friend Fellito.

 

Q. Did you have a wife?

A. Yes, but Natalia died. She drowned.

 

Q. Did you have any children?

A. No, but my wife was pregnant when she died.

 

Q. How long were you with Natalia before she died?

A. We were together for three years.

 

Q. When you first arrived did you get a job?

A. Not right away. I had trouble at first finding any job. Then I worked in a Mexican restaurant.

 

Q. Did you have any kind of problems?

A. Well I moved out of my cousins house because, I felt uncomfortable there. I had to find myself a new place to stay.

 

Q. With whom did you move in?

A. I moved into a house with an old lady who was renting out her rooms

 

Q. What kind of reaction did you get from people who were already in New York?

A. They say, that they didn't understand why people liked New York so much.

 

Q. Did you ever get to accomplish anything in New York?

A. Yes, I helped the owner of the restaurant I worked in. I gave him a loan of five thousand dollars and he gave me partnership in the business, but that was trouble.

 

Q. What do you mean by saying that it was trouble?

A. I was robbed for the money I was getting from the business. I was also shot for this reason.

 

Q. Did you meet anyone special in New York?

A. I met a lady, that I enjoy being with. Her name is Nancy.

 

Q. Did you regret moving to New York?

A. No, because this is where I met Nancy at, But New York was not what I expected.

 

Q. Do you enjoy living back at Santo Domingo?

A. Yes, I moved back, and got married with Nancy. Now I will continue to live a happy life.

 

In my interview I obtained valuable information on Balbuenas immigration story. I learned that not everyone that comes to the U.S. decides to stay. Balbuena preferred to live in Santo Domingo. I think that the message of this story was that sometimes people are better off in the country they were from.
