Chapter 8

"Brother and Sister"

This chapter is about how James and his family lived. In James' house where there were eight children. They were always hungry. The house was always a mess. Ruth would be working late and bringing food home for the children. When she walked in everyone would fight for the food. They would steal each other's food. These people were very poor. I feel sorry for them because some nights they would have to sleep hungry.

Sometimes all they would eat was peanut butter. When their mom did cook they didn't like the food.

Chapter 9

"Shul"

This chapter was rather short and there wasn't much to relate too. But I can say I was kind of like Ruth. I never did starve. My parents weren't poor poor, but we were just making it. There were five of us. To me, my parents are the best. Even though we were short on money we were always happy and always had everything we needed. My mother was good at saving money. Every year my parents would take us on a vacation to Puerto Rico, Niagara Falls, Disney World and other places near Philadelphia. Now, both of my parents are police officers. Between the two they make about $75-80,000 a year and have two new cars. But they're not as happy as they used to be. I think that goes to show that money isn't as important as love and affection which Ruth needed too.

Chapter 19

"The Promise"

In this chapter Ruth and Dennis finally get together. When things are great between them Ruth wants to call her mom, she does finding out she is ill and goes down to Suffolk. During Ruth's stay so much goes on with her father and mother. The end result of their mariage is divorce.

This is hard on Ruth but even harder for Dee Dee at the age of 15. Emotions weren't expressed much in their home, but at the end that changed. Dee Dee asked Ruth not to leave and she made her promise-Ruth did but this promise was broke. It wasn't that it didn't mean anything to Ruth Because it did and a lot but that was just the way things worked out.

One thing I found intersting was that Ruth said that while she was growing up she never really knew anything about her father-nothing at all. That's the same way it was with the Mc Bride and Jordan children-they knew nothing at all.
