Grant Awarded to Edison/Fareira

 

Edison/Fareira has been awarded $137,000 from the State of Pennsylvania for improved student attendance. A committee representative of the school and community will determine how to utilize the funds.

The second semester officially began on January 23rd. Parents should along with their son/daughter check that she/he is on track to either be promoted to the next grade level or graduate. Counselors are available to assist in this area.

Thanks are extended to parents for supporting the school uniform policy. We request a continued effort to ensure students are appropriately dressed in a solid white top and khaki bottom.

Please be advised that the lateness policy is in effect. After 8:00, a detention will be assigned that must be honored on the same afternoon. Students failing to report will be immediately suspended and not permitted back into the building for reinstatement without a parent. Students must take books home daily and have them in their possession when reporting the next day.

After School Summer School for the second semester will begin on Wednesday, February 20th. Students may register with Mrs. Gold in Room 245A.

Ninth Grade Success Academy students are now visiting vocational shops to make Small Learning Community selections for tenth grade. Forms will soon be sent home for parent approval.

Dr. José Manuel Navarro is working on his first book. Titled Creating Tropical Yankees: Social Science Textbooks and US Ideological Control in Puerto Rico, 1898-1908, it should be published by the end of this calendar year by Routledge, Inc. In New York City.


Aita Harmon and Arnita Hill along with their teacher/mentor, Mrs. Veresta Hyman, attended the Forensics Mentors Institute in Willow Grove, PA sponsored by The Fredric Rieders Family Renaissance Foundation. The eight-week summer session focused on teaching through research, academic instruction and support of scientific and humanistic activities. Groups were assigned projects in the areas of Quantification of Amiodarone in Heart Tissue; Stabilization of Cyanide Solutions; Determination of Aspartame - Derived Formaldehyde; GHB/GBL Detection in Beverages, Kava Kava Analytical Patterns; and Selenium and Hair Morphology using Scanning and Electron Microscopy. The students gained first hand experiences with the use of the following analytical instruments/procedures: Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectroscopy, Thin Layer Chromatography, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and HPLC - High Performance Liquid Chromatography.

Tenth grade students from the Motivation Small Learning Community attended the Tenth Annual World AIDS Day Ceremony commemorating children and youth at the Joseph Stokes Auditorium at Children's Hospital on Friday, November 30, 2001. The class will attempt to educate and provide a solution to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the Philadelphia area via education and awareness. ESEAA (Edison Students Educating Against AIDS) will present its education/awareness program to students in the 9th Grade Success Academy at Edison and to several middle schools within the Central East Academic Area. Biology teacher, Mrs. Veresta Hyman, was awarded a $3,000 grant by the School District of Philadelphia's Department of Health and Physical Education. The funds will be used to purchase iMac computer accessories, web publishing kits and training students to serve as peer mentors for HIV/AIDS education. Edison has implemented a program of STD screening in the school's Health Resource Center in collaboration with the Philadelphia Department of Public Health and St. Christopher's Hospital. The program is voluntary and available to any student upon request. Students attending the ceremony were: Aisha Isley, Rasheetra Seabrooks, Candice Brown, Ismaleys Colon, Jomyra Crespo, Helena Henry, Joshlyn Latimer, Michael Lugo, Eneida Malave, Crystal Monroe, Daphne Ramos,Baudilio Reyes, Tiffany Ristine, Ebone Walker, Elia Gomez, Stephanie Sanchez, Angel Rosa, Jennifer Ramirez, and Jaime Rivera. Angel Rosa, Ismaleys Colon, Jomyra Crespo and Joslyn Latimer were presenters at the ceremony.

Francis Carreras, Sheilee Marie Carrion, Ghislaen Rodriguez, and Joel Medina of the Ninth Grade Success Academy participated as hosts and hostesses at the fiesta of Three Kings given by Taller Puertorriqueño. The activity was held on Friday, January 4th in the Roberto P. Hernandez Theater and Joel served as one of the three kings.

The Multicultural Small Learning Community held its Awards Assembly on Friday, December 14th to celebrate students on the honor roll and with excellent attendance. The program highlighted achievement during the first marking period. Mrs. Nilza Lozada, program coordinator, served as emcee of the program which included musical and dance performances and a skit. Certificates and awards were presented to outstanding students.

Thirteen Multicultural Small Learning Community sophomores have been accepted into Project LOGRO (Learning Opportunities for Graduation, Retention and On-the-Job Training). The program includes after school tutorials and workshops, career guidance and college preparatory activities. This year's inductees are Yahaira Canales, Johanna Imperial, Juliana Sarita, Carmen Marrero, Joan Polanco, Nashira Ramos, Rosmery Rodriguez, Oswaldo Soza, Leandro Torres, Javier Troche, Cyd Reyes, Brendaliz Letriz, and Yuri Gonzalez.

Students in Mrs. Corvin's English classes have been enjoying poems by Lenny Belasco, adjunct representative from the Gear Up Program. Poems by Judith Ortiz Cofer and Pablo Neruda have helped the students gain a special appreciation of the five senses. The students have written their own poems which will soon appear in booklet form.

Seven students from the Business Small Learning Community attended the Student Achievement Workshop sponsored by RYA & Premier Covey Co. on Saturday, January 21st at the JFK Vocational Center. Students learned to prioritize goals, increase self-confidence, make smarter decisions, and improve relationships. Attendees included Darryl Irizarry, Yanira Garcia, Gijeid Morales, Joletta Olevich, Eva Lebron, Jeanette Perez, and Luis Ortiz.

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute Program was held in June and July at Temple University to prepare students for careers in science research, pharmacology, and medicine.

These students participated in the following areas: Chemistry: Julio Nuñez, Debbora Bermudez, William Loth, Erica Fonseca, and Ibelismary Alfaro; Molecular Biology: Gabriella Torres, Jesenia Nieves, Nancy Ayana, Joanna Filomeno, and Katie Hernandez.

Team A of the Ninth Grade Success Academy was recently treated to a demonstration by La Fortaleza, a local fitness group. The team also held its Awards Assembly for honor roll and attendance with a visit from the Temple University cheerleaders and mascot.

Sgt. Anthony Floyd of the Philadelphia Police Department visited the Ninth Grade Success Academy on January 23rd to discuss requirements for the polices force and other career opportunities.

Edison is well represented by volunteers at NBC TV10's Homework Helpline. Volunteers answers calls in all subject areas every third week in the month from Monday through Thursday from 5 - 8 PM. This year's volunteers include students Bethzaida Diaz, Jeleiska Rodriguez, Arnita Hill, Aita Harmon, Giovanni Cubano, Julia Monegro, Meylin Concepcion, Linda Morales, Nilsa Torres, Myrna Cruz, and Yahaira Andino. Teacher volunteers include Ms. McCormick, Mr. Horne, Ms. Goode, Mr. Donaher, Ms. D. Johnson, Mr. T. KIng, Ms. Zion, Mr. Bulgin, Ms. Inge, Ms. McLemore, and Ms. Talley.

Congratulations to senior, Nyra Aguilera-Lugo, who was selected to participate in the state finals for Miss Cheerleader of America.

The Extreme Earth Robotics Team is preparing for the regional competition at Drexel University on March 21-23. Parents interested in assisting may contact Mrs. Sharon Ehrlich at the school.
