The New School Year

Welcome to the 2002-2003 school year.  We have high expectations and look forward to providing a positive environment for the success and safety of all students.  Parents should be aware of the rules of the school and are invited to contact the school about any concerns.

The school day begins at 7:41 AM and students are expected to attend regularly and arrive on time with all materials. 7:50 AM is the cutoff time when students will be considered officially late to school.  Students entering the building after 7:50 will be assigned a one-hour detention which must be served on the same day.  Those students not honoring the detention will be automatically suspended.  Parents must then escort them back to school for reinstatement. Students are also required to carry their photo ID at all times.

The school district uniform policy will be strictly enforced.  Students must wear a solid white top and khaki bottom daily.  Young men must remove headwear on entering the building and place it in their bookbag or locker.  Visible headwear may be confiscated by school personnel.

The school district has instituted a new code of conduct to guarantee the safety of students and staff.  All students must display appropriate behavior and may be subject to expulsion for violations of the code.  All students have received a booklet explaining the details of this new policy.

New security measures are now in effect for the protection of  staff and students.  All visitors must: (1) present a photo ID; (2) undergo scanning with a portable metal detector; and (3) sign in the time at the front desk.  Expansion of the procedures is currently under development to include the collection of all bags at the front desk, escort to the main office, presentation of a visitor’s pass that must be worn at all times, and time sign out on leaving the building.

Our goal is to ensure the success of every student and offer a variety of opportunities to maximize that success,  After-school summer school classes will begin this month in every major subject area.  Also, peer tutoring is available after school.  The Twilight Program, underway daily from 3:00 - 6:00 PM, is an alternative to the regular school program.  The new Tenth Grade Success Academy is up and running and located on the second floor.

This year brings the introduction of the Terra Nova Testing Program to assess student performance that replaces the SAT-9.  This new test is aligned with the state standards and is designed to be more engaging to students to relieve the pressure of high stakes testing.   The test is directly linked to classroom instruction and the resulting data allows teachers to make the necessary adjustments to meet students’ needs.  A parallel version of the test will be given in Spanish.

Architectural drafting teacher, Mr. Robert Doan, attended a seminar this summer for the comprehensive training of builders and career and technical instructors.  The program was designed to introduce new national building codes.  The seminar was sponsored by Penn Sate Universities PHRC (PA Housing Research Center) and held at the Lehigh County Career and Technical Institute

Edison was once again a participant in the Puerto Rican Parade on Sunday, September 29. A special thank you goes to all participants who represented the school in a positive manner.

Mr. Julio Padilla is the College Access Program coordinator and is available every Wednesday and Thursday in room 130.  He will offer assistance in completing college applications and financial aid forms. Mr. Padilla may also be reached at 2603 N. 5th St., 4th Fl. Telephone: (215) 739-9360.

We congratulate and welcome the new officers of the Home and School Association: President - Sarah Mulero; Vice President - Sonia Pagan; Secretary - Luz Santiago; and Treasurer - Maria Barada.  A sizable number of parents have been recruited to assist where needed and have already had a positive impact on the school environment by volunteering in the hallways, office, and cafeteria.
