What is your full name?
My name is Wendy de Jesus Rodriguez.
What is your nationality?
My nationality is Dominican.
What is your date of birth?
My date of birth is November 19, 1977.
Where were you born?
I was born in the town of Moncion of the Dominican Republic.
When did you (move to the U.S./move from somewhere else in the U.S.)
to Philadelphia?
I move to Philadelphia in May 26, 1998.
How old were you when you move to Philadelphia?
I came to Philadelphia at the age of 21 years old.
Why did you leave your country/State/former place of residence?
Looking for a better economic stability, to settle myself, and to study in
Philadelphia is the reason I left my country.
What did you like/dislike about your home/country?
I liked all the customs like food, the climate and to be near my family. I
don't like the way the funds are being manage in the town and the country,
how the politicians only get the power to enrich themselves unlawfully and not to help the country.
Why did you choose Philadelphia/U.S?
I didn't actually choose Philadelphia, I just wanted to come to any place of
the United States, and, well, my uncle was living here already.
How did you travel here? What type of transportation did you use/take
to travel here? How would you change that?
I traveled here by airplane, and I wouldn't change that. I like that type of transportation.
How did you find a place to live in Philly?
I came directly to my uncle's house the same day I arrived.
With whom did you travel? [Who did you travel with?]
I traveled in company of 10 musicians who were my partners of a music band of which I am member.
Give 1 thing you remember most about your home town and why?
My family is what I remember the most, because I have passed most of my life with them.
How your life change when you moved and what did were the differences
between the two places?
It was changed drastically, because it was passing from a life of tranquility
and lots of liberty to a life of hard work and sit-in. The differences are
that now I am working and studying and live better than I use to over there.
What did you expect about the US/Philly?
I expected a luxurious city, and also expected to get money, not as hard as it has been.
What did you come here to accomplish and what else do you feel
you still need to do?
I came to settle myself, to stabilize my legal status, and to study.
I think that several of those things are completed, but I still need to
get a college degree which is my dream.
What are the differences between when you came here and now?
I am already settled, studying and I can manage the language better,
something that I couldn't do before.
What did you sacrifice/leave behind when you left?
My family, being 5 years without seeing my family is something indescribable for any person.
What problems did you encounter coming to the US/Philly?
The same thing that any Hispanic encounters at the beginning of their
arrival at the United States like not managing the language, the lukewarm
climate of this country and many more things is was what I had to face coming here.
How much money did you have and where did you get it when you
came to Philly/US?
I had $400 that my family had given me
How did you adapt to your new environment?
It was hard and slow, because of the same things that I was telling you
like the language, the climate, and all of those things.
Why do you think it was worth all your changes?
It was worth [it], although I have gone through a lot of hard work, because I
can send money to my family and do what I want to do, to work and study.
What education did you have before/after you arrived?
I had finished high school, and six months of computing at the Autonomous
University of Santo Domingo.
Do you [ever] regret moving? Why or why not?
No, I don't regret it, although I have gone through hard times, I am settled
with a firm goal of what I want.
What reason would/could make you go back to where you came from?
I have in future plants to bring my family to this country, and if I can't,
I think that would obligate me to go back to Santo Domingo.
Describe your first job here. If you didn't have one, who did
you get money?
My first job was in a foodstuffs store, it was sort of dangerous, because
there was no type of surveillance, and we were exposed to delinquency.
Also the long hours of work, it was from 8:00 in the morning to 9:00 at
night, making it 14 to 15 hours of work daily.

¿De que nacionalidad eres tú?
Yo soy de nacionalidad Dominicana.
¿Cual es tu fecha de nacimiento?
Mi fecha de nacimiento es 19 de Noviembre del 1977.
¿En donde tú naciste?
En el municipio de moncion de la Republica Dominicana.
¿Cuando tú te mudaste a Philadelphia?
En el 1998, Mayo 26.
¿Que edad tenias tu cuando te mudaste?
Llegue a Philadelphia a la edad de 21 anos.
¿Porque dejaste tu país de residencia?
Buscando una mejor estabilidad económica y como establecerme y estudiar
aquí en philadelphia.
¿Que te gustaba o no te gustaba de tu país?
Me gustaban todas las costumbres como la comida, el clima, y el estar junto a
mi familia, y no me gustaba como se manejan los fondos del pueblo y del país,
como los políticos solo llegan al poder solo para enriquecerse ilícitamente y no para el pueblo.
¿Porque razón elegiste a Philadelphia?
En realidad no elegí a Philadelphia, solo quise venir a cualquier lugar de los
Estados Unidos y bueno mi tío ya estaba viviendo aquí.
¿Como viajaste aquí, o que tipo de transportación usaste, y como cambiarias eso?
Vine en avión y no, no me gustaría cambiarlo, me gusta ese tipo de transportación.
¿Como encontraste un sitio donde vivir en philadelphia?
Vine directamente a la casa de mi tío, y llegue el mismo día a su casa.
¿Con quien tú viajaste?
Viaje acompañado de diez músicos, ellos son compañeros de una banda musical en la cual yo estoy.
¿Dime algo de lo cual te recuerdas mas de tu país y porque?
Mi familia, ya que pase la mayor parte de mi vida junto a mi familia, mis
papas y mis hermanos.
¿Como cambio tu vida cuando te mudaste y cual es la diferencia de
los dos lugares?
Cambio muy drásticamente, ya que fue pasar de una vida tranquila y mucha
libertad, a una vida de mucho trabajo y encierro. La diferencia es que
ahora estoy establecido, manejo un poco más el idioma, estoy trabajando
y estudiando, y ahora estoy mejor que antes.
¿Que tu esperabas de Philadelphia?
Esperaba una ciudad lujosa, y también esperaba conseguir dinero de una manera no tan difícil.
¿Que tu llegaste aquí a realizar y que tu todavía sientes que te falta por hacer?
Vine a estabilizarme, y establecer mi estatus legal, y a estudiar, creo que
varias de esas cosas ya están completadas, pero me falta por conseguir un
titulo universitario que es lo que mas sueno.
¿Cuales son las deferencias de cuando llegaste aquí asta ahora?
Ya estoy establecido, estudiando, y manejo un poco mas el idioma que antes no podía.
¿Que sacrificaste o que dejaste atrás cuando te fuiste?
Mi familia, y durar 5 anos sin ver a mi familia es algo indescriptible para cualquier persona.
¿Que problemas enfrentaste cuando llegaste a Philadelphia?
Lo mismo que enfrenta cualquier hispano al principio de su llagada a los Estados
Unidos, de no manejar el idioma, el clima templado de este país, y esas son las principales cosas.
¿Cuanto dinero tenias cuando llegaste y como lo conseguiste cuando llegaste
a Philadelphia?
Tenia unos 400 dólares, que me lo regalo mi familia.
¿Como t e adaptaste a tu nuevo ambiente?
Fue muy difícil y lento, ya que por lo mismo que te iba diciendo el idioma, el idioma
y todo eso.
¿Porque tu crees que valió la pena todo este cambio?
Valió la pena, aunque e pasado mucho trabajo, pero puedo por lo menos mandar dinero a
mi familia y hacer lo que quiero hacer trabajar y estudiar.
¿Que educación tenias tu antes o después que llegaste?
Tenía terminada la preparatoria, y seis meses de informática en la universidad autónoma
de Santo Domingo.
¿Te arrepientes de haberte mudado, si o porque no?
No, no me arrepiento. De lo que e pasado ya estoy establecido con una meta firme a lo que quiero.
¿Que razón te obligaría a ti volver atrás del país de donde viniste?
Tengo en planes futuros traer a mi familia a este país y si no puedo, creo que eso me
obligaría volver a Santo Domingo.
¿Describe tu primer trabajo y si no tuviste uno como conseguiste dinero?
Mi primer trabajo fue en una tienda de comestibles, era un poco peligroso, ya que no
había ningún tipo de sistema de vigilancia, y estábamos expuestos a los delincuentes,
y también las extensas horas de trabajo. Era de las 8:00 de la mañana hasta las 9:00
de la noche, siendo así unas 14 a 15 horas de trabajo diario.
