Edison/Fareira Teen Set To Examine Field Of Medicine

National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine Offers Career Exploration

Xiomara Andujar of Edison/Fareira High School was accepted to participate in the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine (NYLF/MED), taking place from July 21-30. NYLF/MED is a career development program for high school students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential and an interest in medicine. Andujar, a participant in the Educational Pipeline Program at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, will join approximately 350 other high school students from around the country.

Throughout the ten-day Forum, NYLF/MED will introduce Andujar to a variety of concepts in public health, medical ethics, research and general practice, including site visits to medical facilities and clinics.  Students will engage in a problem-based learning simulation, an educational method where they are presented with a fictional patient's case history and must diagnose and develop a treatment plan for the patient.
"The National Youth Leadership Forum offers an invaluable perspective for students who participate in the Forum on Medicine." said Donna Weldin, executive director of NYLF.  "The relationships we forge with health care facilities and educational institutions throughout the country afford these young people with an eye-opening experience, introducing them to the broad spectrum of medical careers."

In addition to site visits to cutting-edge medical schools and clinical facilities, Andujar will hear from and have the opportunity to interact with leaders within the medical field,  Students have up-close, personal contact with physicians, surgeons, researches, scientists and medical educators as they go behind the scenes to view these professionals at work.

NYLF is a nonprofit educational organization that brings various professions to life, empowering outstanding high school students with the confidence to make well-informed career choices.  In addition to forums on medicine, NYLF offers programs for students interested in law or national security.  Celebrating its 10th Anniversary in 2002, NYLF has provided programming to more than 50,000 young people.  For additional information, visit NYLF on the Internet at www.nylf.org
