Holiday Greetings

We wish the entire Edison/Fareira family a joyous holiday season.  May the new year bring peace, happiness, and prosperity to all.

Congratulations to Ms. Geraldine Surginer on her appointment as the coordinator of the Electrical Academy.

The Parent Patrol Induction Ceremony took place on Friday, October 31st in the IMC.  School District CEO, Paul Vallas, was in attendance to celebrate the accomplishments of our dedicated parents. Also, the Parent Patrol raffled a television and home entertainment system at the "Parent Corner" to raise funds for needy families for the holidays. The group also collected turkeys for Thanksgiving and received donations from numerous community organizations.  Special thanks go to Mrs. Sarah Mulero, president of the  Home and School Association, for her tireless work.

For the first time, high school teachers entered their report grades online.  Even though the training and data entry periods were brief, Edison's teachers made the "grade" of being the first of all high school teachers to complete grades for the first marking period by the due date.  Parent - Teacher Conferences will be held on Tuesday, December 2nd from 6-8 PM.  We look forward to seeing parents to discuss the progress of their children.

The School Pride Committee sponsored its annual collection for Thanksgiving turkeys for needy families in the community.  We appreciate the generosity of staff members in doing their part to make a difference for those in need.

Congratulations to Multicultural Academy senior, Nashira Ramos, who was featured in The Reformer, a publication of the School District of  Philadelphia.  She wrote about her goals for this school year and expressed gratitude to all of those who have helped her achieve success.  Nashira is a member of the National Honor Society, Project LOGRO, Al Día Journalism Project and is also a White Williams scholar.

Students in the White Williams Scholars Program will visit LaSalle University on December 2nd and Rutgers University on December 4th.  Eleventh and twelfth grade students will meet during advisory on December 10th.

David Castillo, Gregory Hopkins, Brandon Jones, Dung Tran, and Hang Tran are participants in the ACES Program at the Please Touch Museum.  The students are working on a project to collect one million pennies and also work in various offices throughout the museum.  David and Gregory participated in the Coming Up Taller Award Celebration at the museum on Thursday, November 20th. Thanks to Mrs. Rhonda McLemore for her work in overseeing this activity.

The Student Government continued its service to the school and community by sponsoring its annual Thanksgiving Food Drive.  Dr. José Manuel Navarro led Book 410 of the Ninth Grade Success Academy to top all competitors by collecting 335 cans of food.  Mrs. Maria Neilio and her advisory, Book 411, brought in 264 cans making Team B the leading group with 599 cans.  Dr. Navarro's advisory will receive a pizza party for its outstanding effort.

D-Team of the Ninth Grade Success Academy held a competition among its three advisories in support of the Student Government's Thanksgiving Food Drive.  For the second year in  a row, D-Team students' generosity far exceeded the expectations of their team leader, Mr. Darryrl Johnson.  Last year's goal was 40 donated cans per advisory.  The goal for D-Team was 120 cans.  Last year's advisories donated 196 cans with the entire D-Team being the winner.  450 cans were donated this year.  Thanks go to advisers Ms. Wolf (420), Ms. Harris (421), and Ms. Powell (419) for instilling a sense of caring and healthy competitiveness in their students.  Special thanks go to the students for their unselfish commitment to our community.  Again, D-Team as a whole was declared winners and will receive a pizza party.

The Student Government adopted the children at the Temple University Medical Center and is collecting toys to distribute for the Christmas holiday.  The students are also planning a holiday assembly program for classes participating in the Thanksgiving and Christmas Toy Drives.  The theme of the assembly is the 1950s, and the students are making their own costumes.  As usual, the organization will adorn the school lobby with a beautiful holiday tree. Thanks to Ms. Geraldine Surginer and her students for their hard work.

The Electrical Academy has sponsored a host of activities for its students. Alumna, Jessica Perez, returned to speak about the Bridges Program which supports employment opportunities for young people.  Speakers from Lincoln Tech, Allentown Business School, and CHI Institute have visited to recruit students. Also, Mrs. Delores Morgan took students from the Child Care Program to the Wachovia Center to see Disney on Ice, The Jungle Book, The Lion King, and Tarzan.

The Robotics Team competed in Ramp Riot 2003 at Wissahickon High School on Saturday, November 15th.  The students placed 20th with a strong effort and will go on to the semi-final competition. Ms. Ehrlich and Mr. Dunakin are the co-sponsors of this activity.
