Val Burton: Endorsed by the Montgomery County Democratic Committee
I'm a native of Baltimore, Maryland. I've lived in Pennsylvania for 18 years, and in the Wissahickon School District for 16 years. I earned an Associates of Applied Science in Human Services, with a Gerontology Option, and has completed internships at Mercy Suburban Hospital: Behavioral Unit, Family Services of Montgomery County, and an Independent Study with the Noyes Foundation, at Norristown State Hospital.
I have a son who is a junior at Wissahickon High School, and a daughter who is in seventh grade at Wissahickon Middle School and have volunteered extensively in the Wissahickon School District over the past 12 years. I served for three years on the Executive Board of the Shady Grove Home and School Association and also chaired the Excess Funds, and Nominating Committees, and co-chaired the Grant Writing committee and Kids C.A.R.E. Community Service Program, and served on several other committees on behalf of the Home and School Association. I have established a respected and lasting rapport with educators, parents, students, residents and business owners, in and around the Wissahickon School District.
My philosophy on learning institutions is that they exist for students; they succeed because of students, and should be focused on ensuring that each and every child in the district is afforded the opportunity to succeed academically. I firmly believe that every child has the capacity to learn. However, this can only be achieved if we ensure that our curriculum allows for purposeful, diversified, effective teaching.
Educators should always be mindful that their purpose is to serve the students, and must pledge themselves to the students’ success, and that this should never be negotiable. I believe the school board directors are charged with balancing the success of the schools in the district, committing to transparency with regard to policy changes, ensuring all affected parties have a voice at the table, and making fiscally responsible decisions on behalf of our students, staff and community.
At the Wissahickon Graduation, June 11th, I was helping out in the Graduation Tent - where folks could pick up water, cakes and other types of refreshment.
Here are two shots of me and some of the other volunteers.
