Our accomplishments -- The students:

  • Learned oral history methods, including interviewing techniques
  • Read primary source materials - oral histories in the American Memory Collection and American Life Histories
  • Analyzed photographs from the FSA/OWA
  • Opened conversations at home about immigration/migration that revealed family histories
  • Produced interesting documents
  • Participated in a first-rate group interview with Dr. Jose Lebron, our school's former principal, who was born in Puerto Rico (now in an edited videotape form)
  • learned how to create web sites
  • Improved their Internet research skills (as well as basic reading and writing skills)
  • Made a real contribution to the history of people who often constitute an invisible community because they are impoverished, speakers of another language or are people of color
