My Blog

Ron Stoloff's Blog - this was created at a PACS meeting and has
such exciting items as my adventures in hearing aids.
This is actually much funnier than it sounds.

Here's a shocking article: I'm being ripped off by my cell phone provider - AT&T.
Published: September 14, 2023

I wrote an Article, "The Negro in Science Fiction" in 1968(!) detailing the lack of black characters in Science Fiction at the time & postulated one reason:
John W Campbell, the powerful editor of the most influential SF magazine at the time, Analog, was deliberately discouraging them.

This was published in the Fanzine, Vorpal Sword & I had the chutzpah to send him a copy.

Following this came a series of 5 letters from him & my responses which I've included here.

Digging around my hard drive I discovered an article I wrote about the
likelihood of building multi-generational starships.

This was published in The Vorpal Sword ~1980, a 'fanzine' that I helped some friends produce.

I discovered an article from the Scientific American that supports my thesis. Read it.

If you know anything about computers, no doubt you've received calls from people who are desperate for help.

One thing about this plea for help is that sometimes they're not really looking for "help" but confirmation that what they're trying to do is the "right thing to do," regardless of what your advice.

This article I wrote for the Data Bus is an example of exactly that and I called it "Mother Knows Best." It's another of those thousands of cautionary tales.

The Saga - moving from my 1st computer, a TRS-80, to an IBM 'clone' in 1985 (posted 12/2016)
BTW: the hard drive mentioned in this article was 10 Megabites - not Giga - & cost $360 in 1985.
That's equivalent to ~$820 today.

Remember Y2K? Here's an article I wrote about it in 1999. It was published in the Data Bus and given as a presentation to a group.

As a Wissahickon School Board member, I was asked to read a bedtime story. It is located on the Wissahickon School District site via YouTube.
If you think your kid would enjoy an amusing story read to them by some old guy with a scratchy voice, this is for you.
